Sandstone Basket Weave Knit Hat Pattern

Knitting materials and knitting tools: 

<> Double-pointed knitting needles 9 (US 13/UK 00). You can use circular needles and magic loop method.

<> Lion Brand Wool, Ease Thick & Quick – 20% wool, 80% acrylic.

<> Tapestry needle or hook, scissors.

Basket weave knit hat size:

Hand circumference: 53-56 cm (21-22”).

Gauge: 10 stitches in = 4 inches in stockinette

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

K – knit

P – purl

Pm – place marker

Yo – yarn over

K2tog – knit two together

Pkp&sl – pick yo stitch and slip it over just made 3 stitches

Basket weave knit hat pattern

Knitting body of the hat:

Cast on 44 stitches. Join to knit in the round. Place marker. Rib k1, p1 for 10 rounds.

Round 11: yo, k1, p1, k1, pick yo stitch and slip it over just made 3 stitches, [p1, yo, k1, p1, k1, pkp&sl] – repeat 10 times, p1

Round 12: rib k1, p1 till the end of round

Round 13: k1, [p1, yo, k1, p1, k1, pkp&sl] – repeat 10 times, p1, yo, k1, p1, k1(you take this stitch from the next round), pkp&sl. Do not move the stitch marker, leave it after the purl stitch

Round 14: rib k1, p1 till the end of round (as you have knitted the first stitch already, you start this round from the purl sts)

Repeat Rounds 11-14 four more times or until hat reaches desired length.

Shaping crown of the knit hat:

Now we are going to move marker one stitch forward.

Round 1: k1, pm, k2tog around (22 stitches)

Round 2: k2tog around (11 stitches)

Round 3: k2tog – 5 times, k1 (6 stitches)

Cut the yarn leaving 10 cm tail. Use tapestry needle or hook, thread the tail through remaining 6 stitches, pull tight. Weave in ends.
