We can all agree that cable hats are super lovely, but white cable hats have a special place in my heart. I love the purity, brightness, and simplicity of white yarn, especially when it’s combined with elegant cables. Meet Selene, the goddess of the Moon, and the Queen of knit cable beanies. Just in time for those who seeks inspiration for a last minute Christmas gift. Enjoy knitting, wearing and gifting this magnificent hat.

Knitting materials and tools:

    • 16″ circular needle in size 3 or 3.5 mm (US 4/UK 9) or double-pointed knitting needles might work as well.
    • Lana d’Irlanda – 100% pure new wool, 190 meters – 100 grams. Color of your choice.
    • Weight Category – Aran. Quantity –1 ball, depends on size. If you have difficulty to find aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 90-100 m (95-105 yards) per 50 grams skein.

Selene cable knit beanie size:

Head circumference: 53-57 cm (21-23”).

Gauge: 21-22 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

K – knit,

P – purl,

Cable 8 Back (C8B): Slip 8 knit stitches to the extra needle and hold in back of work, k8 from the left hand needle, k8 from the extra needle.

Ribbing of the cable knit beanie:

So, let’s start. Cast on 96 stitches for the hat. Place marker and join to knit in the round.

Round 1-5: Begin with rib 2 by 2 *knit 2, purl 2* keep repeating.

Body of the cable knit beanie:

Round 1: In this round, we are going to increase. Please use any methods you know. In my case, I am going to *knit one stitch from the previous round, k1, knit one stitch from the previous round, k1, k2 * repeat to the end of round. At the end of this round, you will get in total 144 stitches.

Round 2-6: knit in stockinette stitch.

Round 7: *k8, C8F repeat from* to end of round.

Round 8-15: knit in stockinette stitch.

Round 16: *C8B, k8, repeat from* to end of round.

Rounds 17 -24: knit in stockinette stitch.

Repeat Rounds 7-24 once more. Then repeat Rounds 7-16.

The hat should now measure approximately 18-19 сm from the edge.

Round 4: knit in stockinette stitch.

Round 6: knit in stockinette stitch.

Round 7: *k2tog repeat from* to end of round.

Round 8: knit in stockinette stitch.

Cut yarn leaving 10-15 cm tail. Use hook or tapestry needle to pull yarn tail through the last remaining stitches. Pull tight to close the hole. Hide the tail inside of the hat and weave it in into the back side of our stitches.

Coming to the final part of its pattern you have at least a couple of options to decorate your hat with a pom pom. The first one is to make a handmade pom from black or white threads. The second one is to tie a real/faux fur pom pom.

So very pretty. I am wondering if you couldn’t make a scarf in this same very pattern of stitch to maatch to make a set….it would be lovely, I would think that you would have to do a moss stitch on the sides of the scarf to make it lay down and even and not pull inwaards because of the cables, but it would be lovely.

Hi Brenda. He is reversible scarf https://crazyhands.net/sunnyside-cable-scarf-pattern/. But if you want to knit absolutely the same cables you better knit cowl instead of scarf.

Could you do a pattern for this, for straight needle knitting?

This hat is knitted in rounds. Use DPN if you do not have circular
