Knitting materials and tools:
Circular or double-pointed knitting needles 3.5 mm (US 4). 3 mm (UK 11) for the mitten ribbing.
Yarnspirations, Bernat Premium (4) – 100% acrylic, 198 grams – 329 meters per skein. Color A – blue, Color B – white.
Hook 4 or 4.5 mm for the booties ties.
Knit striped beanie size:
Size: Newborn baby – 4 months – 36-41 cm (21-22”)
Gauge: 18 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
k2tog – knit two together
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
Sk2p – slip, knit two together, pass over.
p – purl
Sl 1p – slip one stitch purlwise
Sl 1k – slip one stitch knitwise
p2tog – purl two together
p3tog – purl three together
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
pm – place stitch marker
RS – right side
WS – wrong side

Knitting beanie’s body:
Cast on 54 sts or any number multiple of 6.
Color A:
Rounds 1-6: [k1, p1] – repeat around. At this point, the ribbing measures about 3 cm.
Rounds 7-10: knit all sts around.
Color B:
Round 11: knit all stitches around.
Round 12: slip 1, knit all stitches around. Slipping the first stitch in the second round of each new stripe will make the color change smooth and prevent jogs.
Rounds 13-14: knit all stitches around.
Color A:
Round 15: knit all stitches around.
Round 16: slip 1, knit all stitches around.
Rounds 17-18: knit all stitches around.
Color B:
Rounds 19: knit all stitches around.
Round 20: slip 1, knit all stitches around.
Rounds 21-22: knit all stitches around.

Round 23: knit all stitches around.
Round 24: slip 1, knit all stitches around.
Rounds 25-26: knit all stitches around.
The hat should measure approximately 10 -11 cm (4 in). Add more rounds if needed.
Shaping beanie’s crown:
Color B:
Round 1: [k4, k2tog] – repeat 9 times. (45)
Round 2: slip 1, knit all stitches around.
Round 3: [k3, k2tog] – repeat 9 times. (36)
Round 4: knit all stitches around. Cut Color B.
Color A:
Round 5: [k2, k2tog] – repeat 9 times. (27)
Round 6: knit all stitches around.
Round 7: [k1, k2tog] – repeat 9 times. (18)
Round 8: knit all stitches around.
Round 9: [k2tog] – repeat 9 times. (9)
Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm (6 in) tail. Using a yarn needle, thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the opening. Weave in the ends on the wrong side.
