Knitting materials and tools:
Circular or straight knitting needles 3.5 mm (US 4).
Tent Sale, Soft Worsted – 100% acrylic.
Weight Category – (4) Medium. Quantity – 50-55 grams.
Cable needle, stitch markers, yarn needle.
Flat knit cable socks size:
Size: US 7 (24 cm). Follow the instruction tips to adjust the sock size.
Gauge: 18-19 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
How to calculate the right size:
24 cm -10% (for stretch) = 22 cm final slipper length.
Leg opening (average for most women’s sizes): 11 cm
22 cm -11 cm = 11cm- toe section length.
The slipper’s height should be approximately 10 cm for all sizes. Adjust this by using larger or smaller knitting needles if needed for a better fit.
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
k2tog – knit two together
p – purl
pm – place marker
RS – right side
WS – wrong side
LHN – left-hand needle
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch.
C4F – slip 2 sts to a cable needle and hold them in front of your work, knit the next 2 sts from the LHN, then knit the 2 sts from the cable needle.
Flat cable socks knitting pattern:
Knitting the body of a cable slipper:
Cast on 20 stitches.
Row 1: sel s, k3, pm, p1, k4, p1, pm, k9, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, k10, p4, k4, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, k3, p1, k4, p1, k9, sel s.
Row 4: sel s, k10, p4, k4, sel s.
Row 5: sel s, k3, p1, C4F, p1, k9, sel s.
Row 6: sel s, k10, p4, k4, sel s.
Repeat Rows 1-6 ten more times, then repeat Rows 1-4 once. At this point, your piece should measure the equivalent of two lengths of the opening, approximately 22 cm.
Fold the piece in half with the wrong side facing you. Locate the corner with the cast-on tail, and start picking up stitches from this corner on the wrong side. To do this, insert the needle from front to back, yarn over, and draw up a loop.
Pick up 20 stitches along the edge. To eliminate the visible purl bumps on the right side in the cable section (which is worked in stockinette stitch), pick up 4 cable stitches on the right side by inserting the needle from back to front. You can use a crochet hook to assist with this step if needed. If this process is unclear, please refer to the Youtube video tutorial for a visual demonstration.
Since the last row was Row 4, proceed by working the cable twist in the next row.
Next Row (RS): sel s, k9, p1, C4F, p1, k8, p1, C4F, p1, k9, sel s.
Next Row (WS): sel s, k10, p4, k10, p4, k10, sel s.
Row 1 (RS): sel s, k9, p1, k4, p1, k8, p1, k4, p1, k9, sel s.
Row 2 (WS): sel s, k10, p4, k10, p4, k10, sel s.
Row 3 (RS): sel s, k9, p1, k4, p1, k8, p1, k4, p1, k9, sel s.
Row 4 (WS): sel s, k10, p4, k10, p4, k10, sel s.
Row 5 (RS): sel s, k9, p1, C4F, p1, k8, p1, C4F, p1, k9, sel s.
Row 6 (WS): sel s, k10, p4, k10, p4, k10, sel s.
Repeat the last 6 rows four more times, then repeat Rows 1-4 once, or until the slipper measures 20-21 cm.
Shaping the toe of a cable slipper:
Row 1: sel s, [k2tog] – repeat till the end, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, [k2tog] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.
Cut the yarn leaving about the 70 cm tail.
Using a yarn needle, thread the tail through the remaining stitches. Then, fold the slipper with the right side facing out and sew the sole as shown in the video. Start by inserting the needle from front to back under the selvage stitch of the piece farthest from you, then insert it from back to front under the selvage stitch of the piece closest to you. Continue sewing the sole in this manner until you reach the heel. To shape the heel, thread the tail through the last 10 stitches, with 5 stitches on each side, to round it slightly. For further guidance, please refer to the video tutorial.
