Nature is beautiful and whenever I struggle with any pattern, I plug into its truly unlimited creativity. Spikelet hat was inspired by sprouting seeds of wheat and broccoli in my kitchen and brought to you with bulky yarn and needles 🙂 Spikelet bulky hat is made using circular 9 mm needles, so you need to know how to knit in the round before jumping into this project. Knitting materials and knitting tools:
<> Circular (40 cm) or double pointed knitting needles, size 9 mm (US 13/UK 0)
<> Lion Brand Wool, Ease Thick & Quick bulky yarn – 20% wool, 80% acrylic. Color of your choice. In total 150 grams.
Spikelet bulky hat size:
Adult: 53-58 cm
Gauge: 9-10 stitches in = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
yo – yarn over
k2tog – knit two together.
k3tog – knit three together.
sp – spikelet – insert the needle between the first and second stitch and pull the yarn, then make a yo, and after k2tog (first and second stitch). You have transformed 2 stitches into 3.
sp0 – spikelet0 – insert the needle between the first and second stitch and pull the yarn, then k2tog (first and second stitch).
sp01 – spikelet01 – insert the needle between the first and second stitch and pull the yarn, then k3tog (first, second and third stitches).
sp1 – spikelet1 – insert the needle between the second and third stitch and pull the yarn, then make a yo, and after k3tog (first, second and third stitches).

p2tog – purl two together
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
Spikelet bulky yarn knit hat pattern
Body of the bulky knit hat:
Using long tail method cast on 44 stitches or any other number divisible by 4. Place marker and join to knit in the round. Rib k1, p1 for 8 rounds.
Round 1: [sp, p2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2: [k3, p2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 3: [sp1, p2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 4: [k3, p2] – repeat till the end of round.
Repeat Rounds 3-4 seven more times or until hat measures 19 cm from the edge.
Shaping the crown of bulky knit hat:
Round 1: [sp1, p2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2: [k3, p1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 3: [sp0, p2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 4: [k2, p1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 5: [sp01] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 6: [skpo] – repeat till the end of round.
Fasten off leaving 10 cm tail. Draw through remaining 11 stitches. Pull tail to close top. Weave in all ends and block.
