Knitting materials and tools:
<> Double-pointed or circular knitting needles 4 mm (US 6 /UK 8). If you find yourself as a tight knitter switch for 4.5 mm (US 7 /UK 7) for the main part. Use a bigger needles size if you want to get a bigger hat size.
<> Knit Picks, Simply Wool – 100% Eco Wool. Color #: OC, 100 grams -193 yards per skein. Optionally add long mink wool yarn (lace), just to make the hat even warmer.
<> Weight Category – 5. Quantity: 115-120 grams. If you have difficulty finding the aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 100 m (110 yards) per 100 grams skein.
<> Pom – black/white/purple color. Material – natural fur / faux fur / yarn pom pom. Size – 15-16-17 cm.
Unisex winter knit hat size:
Head circumference: 53-58 cm (21-22”).
Gauge: 15 -16 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
K – knit
P – purl
Pm – place marker
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
K2tog – knit two together
st(s) – stitch(es)
Unisex winter knit hat pattern:
Using 4 mm knitting needles (40 cm), cast on 80 stitches or any other number that is divisible by 4. Place stitch marker and join to knit in the round. Rib k1, p1 until piece measures 13-14 cm.
Switch to 4.5 mm knitting needles.
Round 1: [k3, slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2: p1, [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in back, p3]– repeat till the end of round, slip the next stitch holding working yarn in back, p2.
Repeat Rounds 1-2 until hat reaches 27-28 cm.
Finish knitting with Round 1.
Shaping the crown of unisex winter hat:
Round 1: p1, [k1, p3tog] – repeat until you have 3 stitches before the stitch marker. K1, now remove your stitch marker and place it 2 stitches back. Now, this is a new beginning.
Round 2: p3tog, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end of round, k1.
Round 3: k2tog all the way around.
Break yarn and leave 10-15 cm tail. Thread end through the remaining stitches and fasten securely. Weave in all ends.
Optionally attach yarn, faux or real fur pom pom.
